3. Invest in an insulated CamelBak hydration system to keep yourself hydrated during your hot summer rides.
4. Check out our airy and sweat-wicking cycling clothing to avoid that sticky feeling while hammering up those climbs.
5. Try on a light-coloured helmet with lots of big vents that will reflect heat away and maximize air flow to your melon.

LR’s McBeth and Devantier Rip up Delta and Squamish

July 24th, 2006

Local Ride boys Roy McBeth and Steve Devantier were in action again on the weekend, logging top 10 finishes at the Tour de Delta road criterium and the Gearjammer Provincial Mountain Bike Marathon Championships.

“[Tour de] Delta was a good experience. It was fun to do a high-level race where many of North America’s pro teams were there,” raved Devantier. “And Gearjammer was just an awesome course… so much singletrack. It was just great.”

McBeth, who placed second in the Category 4 Men’s race at the B.C. Criterium Championships earlier this month, powered to ninth place in Delta on Saturday in an exciting 40-man pack sprint with the help of teammate, Devantier.

Riders sped around 30 laps of an 800-metre course in an action-packed competition riddled with crashes. Devantier attacked in the last few laps to spread out the pack and make the final sprint a safe one for McBeth. After his effort, Devantier finished 34th.

Devantier went on to finish seventh in the B.C. Cross Country Mountain Bike Marathon Championships in Squamish on Sunday on a challenging 47-kilometre off-road loop.

“Steve’s ability to race two days in a row and still achieve a top 10 on the second day in the blistering heat shows the quality of riders we have on the team. Roy is strong and consistently learning, and considering this is his first season racing on the road, I’m just so pleased,” said Barry Lyster, owner of Local Ride Bike Shop in Maple Ridge.

The Local Ride Racing Team consists of seven members: Robbie Bitz, Gord Cooper, Devantier, Lyster, McBeth, Shane Reaume and Brad Schauermann

Roy McBeth 2nd at BC Criterium Championships

July 18th, 2006

Roy rips up the road on his carbon Giant.

Local Ride’s Roy McBeth sprinted his road bike to second place Sunday, July 9 at the B.C. Criterium Cycling Championships in North Vancouver.

The 36-year-old member of the Local Ride Racing Team, barreled around a one-block course for 20 kilometres in the high-speed cycling event. After finishing the Category 4 men’s race, he waited and had another go in the Master Men’s 30-39 category.

“I managed to ride in the lead group of seven for most of the race, made a couple of attacks and won a sprint prime. The earlier race zapped me, though, and I didn’t quite have the legs left for the finish,” said McBeth of his second race.

McBeth is on a roll, after placing second at the Yaletown Grand Prix Criterium in the Master Men’s Category Vancouver on July 1st.

“We’re really excited about what our team members have achieved so far in our first season,” said Local Ride Bike Shop owner, Barry Lyster. “With Roy’s success, we’re looking forward to building an even stronger team in 2007.”

The Local Ride Racing Team currently consists of seven members, all residents of Maple Ridge: Robbie Bitz, Gord Cooper, Steve Devantier, Lyster, McBeth, Shane Reaume and Brad Schauermann
