Track stars and epic riding
Local Ride Racing’s Barry, Steve and Rob K. are licensed to race on the track at the Burnaby Velodrome! Yesterday the trio completed their Learn to Race clinic on the 200-metre wooden track with its gravity-defying 47-degree corners. Steve showed some natural track racing talent when he rode away from the group in a practice Scratch Race. “I’m definitely going to do more track racing,” he said enthusiastically. He’s eagerly awaiting his new Jamis Sputnik single speed, brake-less, fixed gear track bike, which can also be converted into a fully freewheeling, stopping, commuting machine.

Robbie celebrated his birthday on an epic Sunday Morning Ride with seven other die-hards, including new rider Ryan. The birthday boy got to choose the route and he took full advantage of his cyclocross skills and his Giant TCX ‘cross bike, taking the train of riders on a series of gravel roads by Alouette Lake. The guys were in the windy, wet weather for three hours. Happy Birthday, Robbie!

Local Ride Racing Team
The guys and gals of the Local Ride Racing Team have started their winter training. They have their sights set on next season, which will kick off with the Escape Velocity Spring Series, which starts in March. That’s only three and a half months away!!! The provisional National Cycling Calendar is on Canadian Cyclist and it says Mountain Bike Nationals are in B.C. again — at Mount Washington!
This time of year, you may meet Local Ride Racing members logging long miles on the roads and trails of the Lower Mainland. And since it’s nearly winter, it’s the perfect time to add some spice to training, so you could even spot the racers running, climbing, lifting weights, cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Be sure to say hi!
Spinning!
Monday Night Spin Sessions will start on Monday, November 27 at Local Ride Bike Shop. We’ll start things off at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water and $5 for the drop in fee. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rental trainers available for $5 per session. Workouts generally last between one and two hours.
Want to do some indoor training at home? We offer Spinerval DVD rentals at $5 for two days. Titles include: Recovery and Technique, Suffer O Rama, The Uphill Grind and The Sprinting Machine. We’ll also have new training DVD’s available in December.
Sunday Rides
Last Sunday, eight riders came out for the Sunday Morning Ride. Join us every Sunday. Depending on numbers, we’ll try to split into an “A” and “B” group. The “A” Group normally averages around 30kph for 3+ hours, while the “B” Group hovers around 25kph for 2+ hours. Road bikes are highly recommended and as the rain rolls in, we’re making fenders (with extenders) mandatory, unless you’re content to ride at the back of the pack. Make sure you join us for coffee before we head off:
Where: Starbuck’s at Valley Fair Mall, Lougheed Hwy., Maple Ridge
When: Sundays @ 8:30 a.m. for coffee; ETD @ 9:00 a.m.
