Grab your bike and get out there. It’s a beautiful day for a ride! Whether it’s a half-hour spin on the dike with the dog, or a pre-dinner tour on the road, you don’t need an excuse to get back in the saddle. We’ve been riding up a storm, taking full advantage of the clear skies and lengthening days. On Saturday, we had our inaugural Saturday Women’s Ride, which was a success. Sunday, we had a record number of riders meet for a great tour through Maple Ridge, Mission, Abbotsford and Langley. Check out page 2 of Issue #58 of Maple Ridge’s Positively The News for a photo of Sunday’s group. We’d like to welcome new staff member, Keith White. We’re lucky to have him on board, as he’s a great mechanic who knows his way around bikes. A former pro 4-cross racer, Keith also loves riding! Stop by and say “Hi” next time you’re in the neighbourhood. Also, kudos to Dave for attending a recent Shimano seminar. Shimano is the biggest manufacturer of bicycle components and Dave got all the info. If you have any questions, Shimano-related or anything else, Dave and the rest of our shop crew will be happy to help. Steve, Marie and Mike took to their trainers and did a Mental Toughness workout with Spinervals’ Coach Troy . Come out for weekly indoor spinning sessions, Mondays at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rentals available for $5 per session. Please call ahead to reserve. Workouts generally last between one and two hours. Where: Local Ride Bike Shop When: Monday nights at 6:15 p.m. Cost: $5 drop-in fee, $5 trainer rental Sunday Ride Sunday’s Ride drew a record 14 riders last weekend. It was a perfect day to get out on two wheels, despite the chilliness. After a quick photo shoot, the crew embarked on an epic adventure that took them through the backroads of Maple Ridge, Mission, Abbotsford and Langley, before they crossed the Fraser to get back home. The ride included five flat tires and one crash, but no injuries. Join us regularly for a Sunday road ride. With such a large number of riders and a varying level of abilities, we recognize it’s time to create a more consistent division in the group. Therefore, starting this Sunday, we will guarantee a B-Group led by someone who knows the area. As evidenced by our last ride, the A-Group rides can be very strenuous and last up to six hours. They’re a great workout for experienced and trained cyclists, but not ideal for people who aren’t used to intense riding. Barry will be leading the B-Group this weekend. If you’re planning on joining the B-Group, please contact us at the store and let us know. We look forward seeing you! Road bikes with fenders and fender extenders are mandatory. Where: Starbuck’s at Valley Fair Mall in Maple Ridge When: Sundays @ 8:30 a.m. for coffee; ETD @ 9:00 a.m. Tip of the Week All the flats occurring lately might mean it’s time for a mid-winter tire change. After all those long winter rides, tires are bound to get worn out, and once they do, a barrage of flats signals it’s time to get some new tread. We have lots of rubber in stock, including durable and ultra flat-resistant Specialized Armadillos. Saturday Women’s Ride Local Ride’s first Saturday Women’s Ride finally took off last weekend and the group of seven women had a blast! Nona, Tanya, Jocelyn, Tricia, Jeanine, Marie and Sandra had a great workout on the roads of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, learning group riding skills and etiquette. Our goal is to gather a group of women focused on building endurance through a steady, fun and supportive road ride of around three hours. We are open to splitting into groups to accommodate different levels. Road bikes and fenders (with extenders) are mandatory. The ride happens rain or shine (but not if there’s snow and ice)! Please call or come by the shop if you have any questions. Join us for coffee at 8:30 before we head off at 9:00.

Where: Starbuck’s at Valley Fair Mall in Maple Ridge When: Saturdays @ 8:30 a.m. for coffee; ETD @ 9:00 a.m. Women’s Bike Maintenance Clinic By popular demand, we’ll be offering a women’s basic bike maintenance clinic. Topics will include fixing a flat tire, cleaning, lubing and maintaining your bike, adjusting brakes, adjusting gears, fixing a chain, and diagnosing problems and anything else you’ve always wondered about, but were afraid to ask. Please sign up at the store, if you’re coming. Where: Local Ride Bike Shop When: Thursday, February 15, 6:15 p.m. Cost: $5 Race the Ridge 2007 – Call for Volunteers! Race the Ridge presented by Local Ride was awarded BC Cup status this year — that’s big news. Now that we’re part of the provincial road racing series, we want to make sure Race the Ridge, scheduled for April 28-29, is better than ever before. To make Maple Ridge’s Race the Ridge a success, we rely on volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Local Ride Bike Shop. Race the Ridge is depending on you! Please pass this call for volunteers to anyone you think might be interested. Thanks!

This week we’re featuring Specialized’s brand new high-performance answer to flats — the Specialized Roubaix Armadillo Elite tire. This tire offers the best flat protection available in a lightweight raceworthy rubber that’s also ideal for touring. “This tire is a Harris-Roubaix tire if I’ve ever seen one,” said shop mechanic Steve. The Specialized Roubaix Armadillo Elite will be a huge advantage during the Harris-Roubaix Road Race in April, which includes a rough, kilometre-long dike section that has taken out many a contender with a mid-race puncture. It could very well make the difference between the podium and a DNF.
Monday Spin Sessions
Four riders revved up at yesterday’s Spin Session. Barry, Steve, Marie and Mike took to their trainers for Coach Troy’s Autumn Country Training Ride. Come out for weekly indoor spinning sessions, Mondays at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water and $5 for the drop in fee. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rentals available for $5 per session. Please call ahead to reserve. Workouts generally last between one and two hours.

Want to do some indoor training at home? We offer Spinervals DVD rentals at $5 for two days. We now have a bigger selection of training DVDs that includes Rides: Volume 1 – The Rockies and Volume 2 – Las Vegas, plus the Spinervals Endurance Builder 5-Pack. Come check them out our selection and heat up your winter training.
Or ride with the pros as you watch one of the ProTour and Grand Tour races, such as the Tour de France, Paris-Roubaix or Giro D’Italia. We also have mountain bike films like The Collective, and cycling documentaries like Pure, Sweet Hell, Overcoming and Pro.
Sunday Ride
Sunday’s Ride saw a whopping 12 riders meet at the Valley Fair Starbucks, including first-time rider Jeff. Everyone was itching to get out for a good long ride after being hindered by weeks of snow and ice, and a good long ride it was. After fuelling up with java, the crew warmed up on the flats of Pitt Meadows, then took to the hills with ascents of the backroads to the UBC Research Forest, Rock Ridge and to the gate at Golden Ears Park. It was a fantastic way to bid adieu to the snow. See ya this Sunday!
Join us regularly for a Sunday road ride. Depending on numbers, we’ll try to split into an “A” and “B” group. The “A” Group normally averages around 30kph for 3+ hours, while the “B” Group hovers around 20-25kph for 2+ hours. Road bikes and fenders (with extenders) are mandatory. Make sure you join us for coffee before we head off. The ride goes rain or shine, but will be cancelled if there is snow or ice on the roads. If all goes well, we’ll be riding again this Sunday!

Saturday Women’s Ride
Local Ride’s first Saturday Women’s Ride was postponed AGAIN due to slushy and icy conditions. We made the call to put it off for another week for safety reasons. But the Weather Network forecast is lookin’ good and sunny after today, so all signs point to ‘yes’ for this Saturday, January 27.
