Soak up the November sunshine!

November 26th, 2007

Wow! Who would’ve thought we’d have a week like this in late November? This is the type of situation where you tell your boss you’ve come down with a rare bacterial infection and spend the next few days on your bike, enjoying the crisp, dry weather and soaking up some rays. We have everything you need to get riding. We’ll even supply a motivational pep talk free of charge if you come by the store and visit us.

Local Ride Racing Team
There isn’t any racing on the program this weekend, but Barry and Robbie haven’t had enough yet! Their planning on racing ‘cross in Seattle on December 9. Stay tuned for their race report.

For 2008 we’d like to go bigger and better, but that naturally requires a larger budget. We’re in the process of preparing a sponsorship package and proposal that we’ll be bringing to businesses in the community. We’d love to have the local business community involved in our team and we think a partnership with Local Ride Racing would be a benefit to any business. With the huge amount of positive exposure our riders have in the community, be it on the bicycle or in the press, backing the Local Ride Racing Team is a smart choice.

Featured Product
This week we’re featuring TWO items, since Barry and Sandra couldn’t agree on one.

Barry picked Specialized’s Sub Zero gloves. “They’re three gloves in one,” said Barry. “They keep my tiny little fingers warm on cold rides, but use the liners on their own and they’re good for days that are a little warmer!” Plus, the outer shell is waterproof and can also be worn separately. With the Sub Zero’s, you’ll only need one pair of gloves this winter.

Sandra picked the Giant Trainer Mat. “It’s great. I do my core exercises and stretching on it, and then I put my bike and trainer on it to do indoor cycling workouts.” Plus, it’s much more aesthetically pleasing than the old pieces of carpet and cardboard she used to use. And her Mom likes it much better too.

Weekly Specials
This week, all of our in-stock Bell, Giro, Specialized and Giant helmets (excluding Bell Bellistic model) are 20% off. If you’re in the market for a new noggin protector, Local Ride is the place to be! We have a large selection of models, styles, and colours in men’s, women’s, boy’s and girl’s helmets.

Spinning Sessions – Wednesdays!
Getting to spin with the gang at Local Ride is your favourite thing about winter. Local Ride’s Spinning Sessions are back and this winter they’ll be happening every Wednesday night. Last week, Sandra and Mike were the only ones who weren’t afraid.
Come out for weekly indoor spinning sessions, Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water and $5 for the drop in fee. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rentals available for $5 per session. Please call ahead to reserve. Workouts generally last between one and two hours.

Sunday Ride
Join us this Sunday for a great group ride. We plan to split into three groups as needed: “A” Group for stronger riders looking for a longer, quality workout, “B” Group for more recreational riders aiming to build their fitness and the Women’s Group for women who want to improve their fitness and cycling skills in a fun, supportive and social environment. - Helmets and road bikes with fenders and fender extenders are mandatory.

- Make sure you have appropriate clothing.
- We’ve slated the third Sunday of every month as a designated ‘cross ride, which means riders should expect up to 80% of the ride being off-road.
- Note that we sometimes get adventurous anyway and stray from paved roads for some cyclocross-style fun.
- Please call or come by the shop for a pre-ride briefing.

Those of you who are still riding Saturdays, please contact the shop and let us know so we can help you get in contact with one another.

And make sure you join us on Sundays too! All groups will meet for the rides at the same time and place and then split accordingly. See the Sunday Morning Ride info above for meeting details and recommendations. See you soon!

It’s coming…

November 14th, 2007

After the first wind storm of the season, you’re suddenly getting those flashbacks from last year of whipping winds, biting cold, driving rain and even – gasp – snow! Calm down, put on a pot of mint tea and be reassured by the fact that the folks at Local Ride can help get you through it – and you’ll be stronger, fitter and happier come spring!

Local Ride Racing Team
Robbie hasn’t had enough yet! He had a great double-header long weekend of ‘cross racing on Vancouver Island last weekend, where he ripped up the Master Men’s category, placing 5th in Saturday’s race in Cumberland and 6th on Sunday in Errington. Not only did he get two solid results, he won the most aggressive rider award on Saturday. Grrrrrrrrr Robbie! Nice work!

2008 Specialized bikes are rolling in the door! It’s like an early Christmas present. Whenever the newest of the new bikes come in, we get all giddy and start pulling open the boxes and building up the shiny two-wheelers. We also strangely start craving eggnog and plum pudding…. Come check out the bikes! Donations of Christmas treats are gladly accepted.

Sunday Ride
Last Sunday’s Remembrance Day ride was fantastic. Paul, Steve, Mike, Dave, Dave’s neighbour, Ryan, Stacey, Tanya, Sue and Marie (sorry if we missed anyone) did a solid loop in Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge, despite a raucous headwind. It’s great to see so many people out.

It’s Long Ride Time

November 7th, 2007

It’s Long Ride Time
It’s that time of year again – the season for long rides in questionable weather, all for the goal of building endurance so you can get the most out of yourself when the sun comes out and the days are long. Whether you’re a recreational rider or racer, you’ll benefit from winter riding. At Local Ride, we have all the gear you’ll need to keep you motivated, hydrated, fed, warm and dry on your winter rides.

Local Ride Racing Team
Six Local Ride Racing Team riders proved that they’re not afraid of anything last weekend at the final BC Cup cyclocross race of the season in Coquitlam. The torrential rain started in the night and continued all day, rendering extremities cold, numb and virtually useless. Riders battled through mud and sand, which wore down brake pads. Jean Ann placed third in the Women’s A race and second overall in the series. Steve was fourth in the Men’s B race, Graham (Natural Earth) was 14th, Mike was 15th, Robbie 17th and Paul (Natural Earth) 31st. Jeanine finished 4th in the Women’s B category, while Rob K. was 6th in the Men’s C race. Carsten (Natural Earth) was 10th and Roy placed a respectable 15th in only his third Men’s A race. That was it for the season. Robbie and Barry are still considering doing some ‘cross on the Island or in Seattle, but the rest of us are starting up the winter training.

Sunday Ride
We had a great ‘cross ride last Sunday, which took us along the dikes to Pitt Lake and back. We saw herons, a bald eagle, a coyote, some dead salmon, cranberry harvesters, blueberry bushes aflame with fall colours, and the sun even poked out of the clouds. 10 riders showed up for the ‘cross extravaganza!

Join us this Sunday for a great group ride. We plan to split into three groups: “A” Group for stronger riders looking for a longer, quality workout, “B” Group for more recreational riders aiming to build their fitness and the Women’s Group for women who want to improve their fitness and cycling skills in a fun, supportive and social environment.
