Resolution #4: Be Adventurous

Do you often watch from the sidelines as people scale mountains, race IronMan, backcountry hike, or kayak to Alaska? Why not jump in there and be a part of the adventure. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should hop to and climb Everest. Take it one step at a time. Dust off your mountain bike, charter a boat to the end of Pitt Lake and seek out the hot springs. Or just try riding your bike in the snow on the dykes – you’ll have a blast!

Local Ride Racing Team
For 2008 Local Ride Racing plans to go bigger and better, but that naturally requires a larger budget. We’re in the process of preparing a sponsorship package and proposal that we’ll be bringing to businesses in the community. We’d love to have the local business community involved in our team and we think a partnership with Local Ride Racing would be a benefit to any business. With the huge amount of positive exposure our riders have in the community, be it on the bicycle or in the press, backing the Local Ride Racing is a smart choice.

Spinning Sessions – Wednesdays!
Getting to spin with the gang at Local Ride is your favourite thing about winter. Local Ride’s Spinning Sessions are back and this winter they’ll be happening every Wednesday evening.

Can’t spin Wednesdays? How about Tuesdays? We’re calling all you spinners who can’t make it on Wednesdays to e-mail us if you’re interested in Tuesday Spinning Sessions with Jean Ann. Jean Ann is the newest addition to the Local Ride staff and she’s keen to lead you through an indoor workout. You may remember Jean Ann from Local Ride Racing’s Cyclocross squad. She rode onto the podium all over the province during the 2007 season. She is also an elite-level XC mountain biker racer. Welcome aboard, Jean Ann! Come out for weekly indoor spinning sessions, Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water and $5 for the drop in fee. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rentals available for $5 per session.  Please call ahead to let us know you’re coming, as we have limited space. Workouts are cycling specific training sessions designed by a professional cycling coach. They generally take between one and two hours.   Sunday Ride
Sunday dawned snowy, but instead of rolling over and going back to sleep, the core Sunday Morning crew jumped out of bed and gleefully grabbed their ‘cross bikes. Snow and slick roads meant it was much safer riding in the woods. Barry, Roy, Ryan, Jeff, Andrew, Jean Ann , Jeanine and Sandra high-tailed it into the cover of the trees and bombed through snowy trails… until Sandra – who was just riding along – stopped dead because of a snapped derailleur hanger. Roy and Ryan proved that chivalry is not dead, by gallantly converting her bike into a single-speed, which got her through a very fun ride. (Sorry Jeff for getting your name wrong and Jeanine for leaving you out in the e-mail!)

Join us this Sunday for a great group ride. We plan to split into three groups as needed: “A” Group for stronger riders looking for a longer, quality workout, “B” Group for more recreational riders aiming to build their fitness and the Women’s Group for women who want to improve their fitness and cycling skills in a fun, supportive and social environment.

- Helmets and road bikes with fenders and fender extenders are mandatory.
- Make sure you have appropriate clothing.
- We’ve slated the third Sunday of every month as a designated ‘cross ride, which means riders should expect up to 80% of the ride to be off-road.
- Note that we sometimes get adventurous anyway and stray from paved roads for some cyclocross-style fun.
- Please call or come by the shop for a pre-ride briefing.

Enjoy the snow!

Resolution #3: Make Time

Don’t just talk about it – go out and do it! Whether it’s taking time out for a sunny pedal to Pitt Lake, fitting Local Ride’s Wednesday Spin Sessions into your schedule or putting aside an hour to coast around the neighbourhood with your kids, those extra moments you allow yourself will lead to a happier, healthier 2008.

Sunday Ride
Barry’s Epic Birthday ‘Cross Ride yesterday was a blast. 12 riders rolled away from the Valley Fair Starbucks after some hot java, in an attempt to keep themselves warm in single-digit temperatures. The only thing that heated things up, however, was some hilly, off-road cyclocross action. Mother Nature threw in a bunch of snow, creek crossings and winding singletrack, resulting in a ride that left 12 giddy grins plastered to 12 chilly faces. Some schoolgirl giggling could also be heard coming from Barry at sporadic intervals.
(Top) Birthday boy Barry leads Robbie on a runup. (Below) Chris was voted “Hard Man” of the day, because he did the entire ride with a road bike with treadless road tires!

Join us this Sunday for a great group ride. Resolution #2: Do Your Part

With the environment becoming a more immediate issue in 2008, we think a good New Year’s resolution would be for everyone to do their part for Mother Nature. One way you can help the future of the planet is to reduce the carbon emissions you produce – by bicycle commuting. At Local Ride, we have everything you’ll need to cut down on your driving time and gasoline use, while you burn more calories, increase your fitness and clear your mind. It’s a win-win situation!

Local Ride Racing Team
Maggie, Local Ride Racing’s youngest member, had a great introduction to track racing at the Burnaby Velodrome’s 6-Day race on January 5. She won her heat in the kid’s race, ripping up the track on her Specialized Allez Jr. (24”-wheel road bike). Way to go girl!

We had a couple of epic Sunday Morning Rides since our last update. On January 6, a 15-rider pack left the Valley Fair Starbucks at
9:00am, but when the cold rain changed to snow, the breeze turned into icy gusts and a combination of the two infiltrated deep into our bones, many riders threw in the towel, opting to save their extremities from frostbite (we don’t blame you)! Five hardy souls held out: Barry, Mike, Andrew, Sandra and new addition Stef survived to find that by 11:00am, things had warmed up considerably. Way to survive and welcome Stef!

Yesterday, we were treated to a rain-free ride during which even the sun poked through the clouds. After last Sunday, we deserved it! It was a fabulous ride, with a steady pace, lots of hills, sprints, good company, and some great scenery. We cruised along Dewdney Trunk, over the dam, into Mission and around Keystone. It seemed so easy after all the miserable weather we’ve been riding in. Congrats to Jeanine for proving she has what it takes to be an “A” grouper. You’re a star! Remember, this coming Sunday is the third Sunday of the month, which means it’s time for another epic ‘cross ride. It’s no ordinary ‘cross ride (there is no such thing), it’s Barry’s Birthday Ride! He gets to choose the route, so expect up to 80% of the ride to be off-road.

Also note:
- There will be no designated “B” Group leader this week, but if you’re a “B” Group rider, or you don’t have a ‘cross bike, come out anyway. Hopefully there will be others like you who want to ride!
- Those of you who’d like to do the ‘cross ride need to be on cyclocross bike with ‘cross tires and carry a minimum of 2 tubes, plus patches. Please wear appropriate clothing and bring adequate nutrition to survive a 3-hour backcountry adventure.
Join us other Sundays for a great group road ride.

Happy New Year from all the folks at Local Ride! We’d like to wish you a great and successful 2008 filled with lots of cycling!

We had a couple of great Sunday Rides since our last update. On December 23rd, 9 of us braved the driving rain and brutal wind. It was a miserable day, but brightened by a wine-tasting stop, Christmas carols, and the fact that the women outnumbered the men! Last Sunday 11 of us enjoyed a dry ride with a little off-road snow riding thrown into the mix along with lots of hills. Come on out this weekend for the first Sunday Ride of 2008!
