Local Ride Racing lined up on River Road Langley yesterday for the first Spring Series race of the season. After months of dedicated winter training, it was finally time to put their honed fitness and skills to the test. It was a nervous 85-rider B Group that took to the road, with Barry, Roy, Steve, Mike, Ryan, Robbie, Natural Earth Racing, and the Giant Bicycles/Team Whistler Canada Women’s Team focused on keeping good positioning in the pack and staying upright, as crashes happened all around them. Paul (Natural Earth) was caught in a crash and is nursing injuries, but the Local Ride guys came through unscathed, other than Cap’n Roy being forced to ride OVER a downed rider’s bike that was in his path, and Robbie pulling out early with a broken derailleur. Healing thoughts go out to Laura (Giant/Whistler), who went down hard.

Jeanine and Andrew faced off in the C Group, with Andy doing lots of work at the front. Next time he will ATTACK (right?)! Jeanine held her own, proving that she’ll be ready to put the hammer down on the peloton one of these days. Just you wait…. Shani (Giant/Whistler) crashed, but she survived. Dave kept the teams sheltered and warm, and their bikes happy. Thanks! LRR are content with the first race of 2008, but are eager to up the ante on Armstrong next weekend.

Come out for weekly indoor spinning sessions, Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. Bring your bike, trainer, shoes, two towels (one for yourself and one for under your bike) lots of water and $5 for the drop in fee. If you don’t have your own trainer, we’ll have a limited number of rentals available for $5 per session. Please call ahead to let us know you’re coming, as we have limited space. Workouts are cycling specific training sessions designed by a professional cycling coach. They generally take between one and two hours.
Sunday Ride – Note Changes!
Our regular Sunday Morning group rides have been suspended due to the beginning of the Escape Velocity Spring Series races, which run all month long. That means all of our team riders will be off racing. However, we hope that our non-racing, die-hard Sunday Morning regulars will keep up the tradition without us.
Guidelines
- Helmets and road bikes with fenders and fender extenders are mandatory.
- Make sure you have appropriate clothing.
- We’ve slated the third Sunday of every month as a designated ‘cross ride, which means riders should expect up to 80% of the ride to be off-road.
- Note that we sometimes get adventurous anyway and stray from paved roads for some cyclocross-style fun.
- Please call or come by the shop for a pre-ride briefing.
