LRR Grabs the Podium

Sandra racing La Ruta

LRR Race Report
Last Saturday Local Ride Racing was out zipping around Cross(Port)Coquitlam’s twisty grassy course in Lion’s Way Park.  Once again the team brought home some hardware. Ryan Newsome took top spot in the men’s B race, and gained the necessary upgrade points to move up to the A category for next weekend’s BC Cup Finals and Provincial Championships.  Jean Ann repeated her performance from the week before, winning the pro women’s race. Jeannine also finished on the podium, with a 2nd in the women’s B race. Roy was 6th in the master’s race, and Mike Berkenpas was our top finisher in the A men’s race, with a top 10 placing.

Shop Employee takes stage win at La Ruta de los Conquistadores
Local Ride’s favourite pro racer, Sandra Walter headed south for some sunshine and suffering, down in Costa Rica where she competed in La Ruta de los Conquistadores, which boasts itself as the toughest mountain bike stage race in the world. Sandra completed up to 4000m of climbing per day, and a total of 377km of racing in four days, through epic mud, sketchy gravel road descents, scorching climbs and bone jarring railroad track.  Not only did she place second overall, but she also outlasted the other women to take a stage win on the final day.  Good job Sandra!

Scrap-It Program
The shop has recently signed up with the Scrap-It program, a program which works to reduce greenhouse gasses through getting old vehicles off of the road. Through scrapping your old vehicle, you may receive up to $1300.00 toward a new electric bike, or $1200.00 toward a regular bike at Local Ride Bikes. For more information regarding the program check out www.scrapit.ca.

Warning: Cross may be Muddy!

Race Report
Last Sunday’s BC Cup #6 cyclocross race at Aldor Acres in Langley was a wet and muddy one. Rain all week made the course a fun, dirty mess, the first truly wintery cyclocross race of the year.

Local Ride Racing’s own Jean Ann McKirdy came back from time off, after a broken collar bone, to take the win in the A women’s category. Mike Berkenpas, racing his first race with the elite field after a recent upgrade, was our top men’s finisher, in 8th. Ryan Newsome finished a strong 4th in the men’s B category, and the rest of the team were grinning and dirty, after a fun run in the mud. Of course special thanks goes out to double D Hardie, who provided mechanical support, a heated tent and changing area, and a good dose of cheering.  Check out the Pics.
