Race the Ridge Countdown!!

April 21st, 2009

Things are heating up with Local Ride’s, Race The Ridge Stage Race. The weather forecast is for hot, sunny skies, which is a welcome sign for BC racers. The 3 new courses are going to be challenging, with the hilly Thornhill Road Race, a flat 16 km Time Trial and a “Roubaix” style dirt criterium capping off the weekend of events. “This year we made a lot of changes, adding the new courses and making it a time based stage race. Registration is going well, which means we will be offering $4500 in cash and prizes.” said Race organizer Barry Lyster. Click here for all the details.

Registration closes Thursday, April 23 at 6 pm. There is no race day registration.

Races cannot happen without volunteers. If you are available on either the Saturday or Sunday please contact Local Ride Bike Shop. We can use any help, and you’ll have a chance to watch some of the best racing in the province.

Local Ride Racing Has Cake and Eats it too

April 10th, 2009

Local Ride Racing schooled the competition in Sunday’s Escape Velocity Spring Series #7 road cycling race in Abbotsford, when squad leaders Steve and Mike swept the top two positions after riding away in what eventually dwindled to a three-man escape for the final 35 kilometeres of the 105km B Category race.

“It was spectacularly awesome to get my first road race win ever,” said a beaming Steve. He sprinted up the final climb, abandoning team mate and last week’s winner, Mike, who had worked hard to ensure the eventual third place rider didn’t crash the Local Ride victory party.

Local Ride Racing women’s team rider Chelsea also had a successful weekend, taking fourth place in the C Category on Saturday and second on Sunday. The 2007 Western Canada Summer Games champion is on track to qualifying for the Canada Summer Games, August 15-29 on Prince Edward Island.

Local Ride Racing virtually controlled the B race, with nine members in the pack. It was the initiative of two of them that helped start the decisive attack, which saw Steve finish nearly three minutes ahead of the main field. Mike bridged up alone to join the escapees minutes later, and the rest is history.

Local Ride Racing Launches Mike to Victory

April 1st, 2009

The Local Ride Racing Team celebrated its first victory of the season courtesy of Mike “Boonen” Berkenpas when he attacked solo in the final kilometers of the 90km race. The escape left the pack reeling and the riders were forced to sprint for second place. “I knew it would end up being a bunch sprint, and I didn’t want to be in that,” he said afterwards. “I’m pretty ecstatic about how it turned out.” Six other Local Ride racers made the brick and blue presence in the group known by working hard at the front in order to ensure the squad secured a top finish. Their efforts paid off in spades when they saw their man cross the line first. Great work team! Local Ride Racing will be in action again this weekend at the Escape Velocity/dEVo Spring Series rounds #6 and #7.
