The Local Ride Racing Team is having a spectacular season. Last weekend, they tried their luck and their legs south of the border at the Mutual of Enumclaw Road Stage Race in Enumclaw, WA. LRR’s Laura cruised to a spectacular 2nd overall in the women’s category, Chelsea finished a solid 10th, and Shani placed 13th. “It was hot, and it was hard, and it was fun.”

Roy rode an aggressive crit, placing 7th in the Cat 3 Men’s category, and took 13th overall. Mike won the Hero of the Weekend Award for finishing his first-ever Cat 1-2 race – a stage race to boot – placing 46th. Steve also gets an honourable mention for his first foray into the top ranks. Ryan and Andrew made the team proud in the Cat 4 Men’s event. A Special shout goes out to Marie for being Team Support.

Watch for them this Sunday at BC Cup #1 – Westside Classic in Vancouver. This is a fabulous course for spectators, and it’s going to be sunny!

Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race 2009

by Chelsea Bilsbarrow

May 30-31 brought about another weekend of good American racing; the weather was awesome, the sun was shinning, and we were ready.
With almost the full team, we tackled the 6 hour drive down to Enumclaw, Washington.

This omnium style race started off on Saturday and everyone gave it their all on the painfully scenic 10.5km time trial course course , with Laura Brown speeding into second place, only 3 seconds down.

Next up was the citerium. The Cat 4 boys were up just after 3 pm and endured the full strength of the sun for their 40 minutes of pain. Next up was Roy (Cat 3), who despite being deathly ill, held his own on the fast technical, figure-8 course. Following Roy’s race was the women’s Cat 1\2\3 race. With only three Local Riders on the start line, we knew we where going to have to work hard to keep our girl in the running. We worked well together and not only secured Laura’s 2nd place finish but also scored a couple point and merchandise primes along the way. Our efforts paid off as Laura was now leading the race by just 1 point. Last up in the closing darkness was the Men’s 1\2 race with Mike Berkenpas and Steve Devantier waiting nervously on the start line of their very first pro 1\2 race. Both of the men put up a great fight and took away some valuable lessons from the fast and furious pace.

Finally, the ~94km road race. Us women were doing 4 laps of the course which consisted of a 3km climb, a windy but fast descent, and lots of riding through the rolling country side. I set the pace on the first climb, allowing Laura to be launched to win the first QOM points. She had a gap while 3 other riders bridged up to form a small breakaway. They were caught just before the climb on the next lap. It seems the same thing happened every lap: pacing hard up the climb, Laura going for QOM’s, a breakaway establishing, and then getting caught. It was turning into a race of attrition and it was looking like it was going to come down to a bunch sprint. Laura and I were setting up for the sprint as she had to finish well in order to maintain the lead and we had all of the top 5 GC contenders in our group. The lead-out did not go as planned (we need to practice) and we lost the overall but Downtown was able to hang on to second place and I moved up into 10th!

Great weekend. Next up: BC Cup #1 – Westside Cycling Classic in Vancouver, BC
