Rich Wins Tour de Delta Crit

Jasmin sits 2nd on GC after 2 stages

Rich Machhien of Local Ride Racing, continued what he started at the Westside Classic by claiming his second major victory of the season, winning the Tour de Delta crit this past Saturday evening. Held on a perfect crit course – flat and fast – Rich was able to easily distance the field in the final sprint even after being in the days main break.

Check out what Rich had to say after the race:

Meanwhile, Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ also had a strong performance. Jasmin, sitting third of GC to start the crit, made it into a four person break that included teammate Jess Hannah. With Laura and Steph in the main pack disrupting the chase, the break away managed to lap the field setting up a four person sprint for the win. Unfortunately Jasmin only managed 2nd, meaning she still trails on GC by 6 points to the Day 1 and 2 winner. Stayed tuned for results from the stage 3 road race, and find out if the LR/Dr. V girls can pull off the win.

Dave’s Tour de Victoria Report

by Dave

I did the 140 km Tour de Victoria in 6 hrs 18 mins ride time. Unlike in the Gran Fondo Whistler last year, I would NOT have had enough gas left in the tank to ride on to Pemberton. I was able to do all of the hills (there were several through Metchosin before the Highlands and a few after!) with only one stop to get the heart rate down. (There were many others stopped and several others on hills I did not stop on)! The weather was okay, but we had steady rain through the Highlands and on to Sydney. It cleared up after that and last half of ride was sunny. My post-ride beer tasted great – I had recovery Chocolate Porter at the hotel pub where we were staying!

I felt good today and wrenched for Laura, Steph and Rachel at the Bastion Square Gran Prix. Beautiful sunny day. Laura won the TT Saturday night and Steph was third in today’s Gran Prix. Great event.

Let the Races Begin

Summer is almost here, and with it the Race season is finally in full swing mode. Local Ride and friends had a busy weekend; with Team Local Ride/Dr. Vie racing in Victoria and Europe, Dave “double D” Hardie riding the Tour de Victoria, Marathon XCer Ryan Newsome racing Pemberton’s Nimby Fifty, honourary Local Rider racers Sandra and Jean Ann racing Canada Cup XC #2 in Quebec, plus a LRR preride of the Test of Metal course in Squamish, your local bike shop is proving it is a small world after all.

Tour de Victoria

This is what race mechanic Dave had to say about the 140km Tour de Victoria that saw wet rainy conditions from the Higlands to Sydney and dry roads everywhere else, “Been there, did that, got the tee shirt. I Would not have had enough energy left to ride to Pemberton as I said at last year’s Grand Fondo Whistler!” Dave finished in a time of 6 hours 18 minutes showing all us youngsters how it’s done.

Robert Cameron Law Cycling Series

Kona/Russ Hays Time Trial
The 5km course was perfect for World Cup Track gold medalists Laura and Steph. Laura blitzed the course in a time of 7:48 for the WIN, while Steph wasn’t far behind in fourth.

Bastion Square Crit
Laura, Steph and Rachel had a “great race”, managing to snag a podium spot with Steph in 3rd.

Check out some of Dave’s photos of the crit HERE.

Canada MTB Cup XC #2 Baie-St-Paul, Quebec

Jean Ann Berkenpas (Xprexzo Factory) won the 2nd Canada Cup XC MTB race to take the lead in Canada’s premier series. The muddy course suited Jean Ann’s cyclocross skills, while her teammate and Local Ride staffer Sandra Walter used her technical savy to navigate the rooty muck to a 2nd place finish. Congrats girls, and good luck at race #3 in Hardwood Hills.

Team Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+

Through a unique arrangement between sponsors and a Cycling BC, select members of the LR/Dr. V Team have been given the opportunity to race for Team BC. Check HERE for photos and race reports from the UCI 1.2 Verti Advies 7-Dorpenomloop Aalburg Race in Holland (say that 3 times fast) and a Kermesse in Warschoot, Belgium.

Nimby Fifty

The Nimby Fifty, one of the races in BC’s MXC series, didn’t go exactly as planned for Ryan Newsome who lost some ground in the overall. With what may have been a case of food poisoning Ryan struggled on what could be the most technical course in BC after the North Shore Mountain Festival. Not one to exaggerate Ryan had this to say about the race, “Probably the hardest race I’ve ever done.” Nugh said!

And Finally….

With June 18th fast approaching, some members of LRR who didn’t race took advantage of the nice weather and pre-rode the Test of Metal course. Check out some photos HERE.

Barry’s Roubaix: A True Test of Toughness on Two Wheels

Riders, Volunteers, and Spectators Brave Miserable Conditions in the Name of Bike Racing

Sunday’s Second Annual Barry’s Roubaix cycling race presented by Local Ride Bike Shop and held in Pitt Meadows, BC saw the strong separated from the weak in a race that was made especially selective by the miserable weather conditions and 4km section of gravel dyke that riders faced each time around the challenging 10km lap.

“People were dropping like flies out there,” said organizer Barry Lyster, commenting on the majority of racers who abandoned the race when the relentless cold rain and wind overcame them. “I don’t blame them one bit. If it was me racing, I’d still be out there lying in a ditch somewhere,” he added.

Lyster, who stated in the weeks leading up to the event that he hoped for nasty conditions to make the race truly epic, should have been careful what he wished for. His vision was to make his race similar to the historic Paris-Roubaix Spring Classic cycling race that was held on the same day in France and featured the best cyclists in the world. Traditionally, Paris-Roubaix is known for its wretched weather, but ironically, this year the weather in Europe was sunny and mild for the race.

It was a completely different story in Pitt Meadows on Sunday, however, where only 15 of 54 men entered in the Category 1/2 race finished the 110km race, shortened by 10km from the original 120km, more in consideration of the valiant volunteers standing in the cold downpour than of the racers who chose to subject themselves to the misery.

“The weather wreaked havoc on not only the riders, but the brave, steadfast volunteers as well,” said Lyster. “Unlike the riders, they did not have the option to stop.”

Perhaps the toughest riders of the day were the winners of the featured events – the Cat 1/2 men’s and women’s races. It was Curtis Deardon (Team Garneau Evolution) who took the men’s win in a two-man breakaway with team mate Tim Abercrombie (Team Garneau Evolution) in a time of three hours, 17 minutes, and 52 seconds. Adam Thuss (Trek Red Truck Racing) finished third, trailing by nearly 2.5 minutes.

Men’s Podium: Tyler Trace, Adam Thuss, Curtis Deardon, Tim Abercrombie, Jason Thompson
Women’s Podium: Jennifer Schulz, Denise Ramsden, Jasmin Glaesser, Jessica Hannah, Jean Ann Berkenpas

On the women’s side, the six-strong Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ squad controlled most of the 90km race to take first and third places, courtesy of Jasmin Glaesser and Jessica Hannah. Denise Ramsden (Team Juvederm-Specialized-Mazda) snatched up second spot to foil the Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ podium sweep. The trio’s winning time was three hours, five minutes, and 42 seconds.

“The riders who showed up to race were the toughest of the tough,” said Lyster. “I am sure they will still be tasting gravel for the next week or so.” Lyster referred to the gravel that was kicked up by the bicycle tires on the dykes and subsequently coated riders from head to toe in a gritty grey film.

Tanille Stickley (Balance Point Racing) won top honours in the Category 3/4 women’s race. On the 3/4 men’s side, James Cameron (Pro City Racing) came out on top, followed by team mate John Rogers in second. Ryan Calbrick (TripleShot Spinnakers Racing) grabbed third position.

Finn Blackburn (Burnaby Velodrome Club) won the youth race, followed by Local Ride Racing’s Pete Whalen in second and top girl, Maggie Coles-Lyster (Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+) in third.

Alison Wood was the only brave soul to enter the novice women’s race, while Keith Jackson, Jackson Pickell (dEVo), and John-Paul Austring finished top-three in the novice men’s competition.

With 114 racers total, Lyster is pleased with the turnout, especially considering the rain that likely kept lots of would-be racers at bay.

Special thanks to the volunteers, the City of Pitt Meadows, Pitt Meadows Airport Society, the District of Maple Ridge, Cycles Lambert, Local Ride Bike Shop, and Kicking Horse Coffee for making the event possible.

Spring Series Action Continues for Local Ride

This weekend, the sun brought out the Local Ride crew in full force. On Saturday we raced around Aldergrove. The course was pretty fun, with some nice downhills, windy flats and a steep pitch which brought us up to the finish. Another fun factor was the beautiful array of potholes. These cost me a couple tubes and a rim, however, I was able to bear witness to Barry’s awesome mechanical skills – which allowed me to get back into the race quickly. Jenny finished really strong with 6th place, and Rachel rocked it in the C’s.

I would have to say, however, that Sunday’s race was one of the best road races I have done yet. It took place in the Bradner area of northeast Langley, which is one of the toughest courses in the Spring Series circuit. It was relentless, and Local Ride definitely stepped up to the plate in the B’s. Jenny and I were joined by Jean Ann and Sandra, as well as Steve Devantier, Ryan Newsome and Mr. 400 Mike Berkenpas. Having such a large team and support group gave everyone lots of opportunities to initiate attacks, chase down breaks and represent the team at the front. Many of us had never raced or even ridden together before, but when we all put on the same jersey we worked like a well-oiled machine. The outcome of the race was great as well. Jenny ended up 4th.

Finally, I have to thank Dave, Barry and Jeremy for their amazing support. Our tents, heater and coffee setup would rival that of any professional team – as well as their patience and quick thinking when the moment calls for it.

Another great weekend of Spring Series races under our belts, and we can’t wait to tackle them again next weekend!
